What you need to know

Homestar v5 introduced the requirement for continuous mechanical ventilation in homes. Following previous webinars covering why this is important, in this session we’ll discuss how to make sure the chosen system is working properly. Join us to hear tips and learning from the field, and some fundamentals concepts of good system design, including sizing and location of fans and ducts, selection of other system components and how to do basic commissioning.

Getting ventilation right is important for maintaining comfort and minimising the risk of condensation and mould. Most residential designers don’t have the benefit of working dedicated mechanical services engineers on housing projects. During this session, we’ll take some important concepts of ventilation to help residential designers avoid common issues such as noise, draughts or inadequate air flow.

Through his involvement with the Building Excellence Group , Alex is also an active assessor for Green Star and Homestar projects across New Zealand.

Matthew leads work on healthy lower carbon homes at the NZGBC. Overseeing the auditing, research and for Homestar, the national standard for healthy lower carbon homes and buildings.
After completing his Honours Degree in Natural Resources Engineering Matthew now has 15 years of experience leading residential energy efficiency projects and education programmes in New Zealand and Australia. In 2016 he joined the Board of the Passive House Institute New Zealand.

An experienced presenter, facilitator and podcaster, Matthew has interviewed over 200 architects, builders and industry experts from around the World on the Home Style Green podcast.

Sam Dallimore

With over 10 years of experience in the industry as a Homestar professional, he is considered to be one of the leading Assessors in New Zealand and boasts an impressive certification portfolio that ranges from single dwellings up to large scale multi-unit developments, for key stakeholders (including the likes of Fletcher Living, Ockham Residential and Precinct Properties).

A problem solver and strong advocate of the 80/20 rule, Sam is highly regarded for his ability to strike a balance between the technical insight and practical application, which has enabled him to deliver impactful results at a larger scale. Primarily focussed in the residential space, Sam works closely with architects, builders, and developers to achieve their sustainability goals. Leading the Ventilation Collab (a co-operation of ventilation suppliers, building professionals and other stakeholders) she has brought ideas together from across the industry to inform the future direction of ventilation in New Zealand homes.
